Why Design

Why Design aims to encourage secondary level students in Ireland and Northern Ireland to choose a career in design. It provides information on what design courses are available and how to apply for them.

Initiated by designworks Managing Director, Martin Gaffney and published by the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI), it was launched in 2007 by the Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin.

The format consists of 28 pages Singer sewn to create a 56 page booklet. Images relating to each subject are positioned inside bespoke French folds, semi-visible through the 80gsm text pages (and fully visible by opening the folds). I hoped this aspect of the booklet would get the intended audience to interact with and question the design of the piece – to get them thinking about design.

Discover Ireland

The Discover Ireland brand identity was developed as the new domestic consumer facing dimension of Fáilte Ireland.

I was responsible for the creation of the confident and versatile identity system which along with the vibrant colour palette reflected the vision for Irish tourism as a dynamic, innovative and highly regarded sector.

The new brand identity was applied across all consumer touch points from the website to merchandise, print media, advertising, staff uniforms and tourist offices.

Designworks

To signify both designworks' entry into a new area of expertise and their 25th year of business, I was responsible for leading the re-development of the companies website.

The Flash based site was devised to give the studios output the greatest amount of visibility, whilst providing a good level of information on future, current and past events. We also established a section called Workshop to provide the studio with an avenue for showcasing our self-initiated and pro bono projects.

Life Recorded

Matty Gaffney passed away in 2007, over the last decade of his life Matty wrote a folk history book providing a unique insight into the life and times of real characters in County Cavan spanning four centuries. Matty used an old box camera to snap many of the pictures that illustrate the book and he put a Grundig Reel-to-Reel tape recorder to good use in recording the music and song of his own time.

The stories, images and sounds were compiled in the form of a book and CD titled Life Recorded. I was tasked with bringing these all together, developing the format, grid, colour and typographic style, and use of imagery.

It is due for publication late 2009.

Westport Plaza Hotel

Winner of Hospitality Ireland’s, Best New Hotel 2006, the Westport Plaza Hotel swiftly established itself as the standard for four-star accommodation in Ireland’s West.

Designworks were approached during the final phases of construction and I was responsible for the development of the visual identities for the hotel, bar and library. When building was complete, we commissioned and art directed photography and implemented this and the new identities across a wide range of applications throughout the hotel resulting in a striking, yet co-ordinated visual system.
